About Pre-Squad

All Pre-Squad sessions are held in the main pool at Strode and take place over six half term sessions in line with school term times. We aim to swim on Bank Holidays providing they are within the school term.

In Pre-Squad, the basic style developed in learn to swim lessons is turned into one that is more efficient. The distance is increased as is the commitment required, involving two, one hour sessions each week. The swimmer’s stamina begins to build whilst maintaining correct technique. By the end of these levels, the swimmer will be expected to complete a 400m timed set, scull feet and head first, tread water and demonstrate correct starts and turns for each of the four strokes.  Up to this point the programme is aimed at developing an efficient swimming style and NOT speed.

The higher levels that follow emphasise the competitive side of swimming and concentrate on building speed and stamina. At Street the natural progression would be into our Junior Squad - the first of the competitive squads.

It is important that swimmers in Pre-Squad and above bring a drink of water or very dilute squash to training sessions in a plastic drinks bottle. Swimmers need well-fitting goggles, swim hats, suitable swim wear (no board shorts or bikinis), a kickboard and a pull buoy. Kit can be bought through online swim shops such as Proswimwear, Swimpath or Wiggle. Make sure you mark all of your kit including your drinks bottle clearly with your name.

At least once a term we hold time trials or colour galas. All swimmers are encouraged to enter. These are run along the same lines as a real gala but the usual competitive rules are relaxed slightly. We try to make them fun too and actively encourage parents to get involved and lend a hand on poolside (timekeeping, marshalling etc.). Club Championships take place once a year at Millfield School Swimming Pool.

Parents of Pre-Squad children are asked to remain in the building for the duration of the session. When changing, swimmers should use the lockers provided and leave the changing rooms tidy. Children should enter the pool area no more than five minutes before the start of the session and sit on the green bench situated at the shallow end of the main pool.
