4 swimmers at Winter National Championships

Despite an incredibly disrupted year of lockdowns, pool closures and very few competitions, four performance swimmers qualified for the Winter National Championships, which took place at Ponds Forge in Sheffield at the beginning of December.

Head Coach Paul Ritchie commented, ‘With such a long break from competitive swimming, suddenly to ask the swimmers to perform at National level was extremely daunting’ and added ‘how they dealt with the pressure is a real credit to them all and the experience has made them stronger mentally, which will help in the coming months.’

The Club has traditionally had a very strong cohort of breaststroke swimmers.  This year was no exception with Ruby qualifying for both 100m and 200m breaststroke as well as the 200 Individual Medley. A last-minute change in the schedule meant that she had very little time between the 100m and Individual Medley events, but she had very strong swims in all three.  Cora, also a breaststroker, qualified for all three events, the 50m, 100m and 200m, and achieved personal bests in both the 50m and 100m.  Alice, one the Club’s most senior swimmers, took part in the 50m breaststroke and narrowly missed out on reaching the final, which was a major feat with such a strong field of athletes.  An impressive personal best was achieved.  Bella, one of the Club’s butterfly swimmers, competed in both the 50m and 100m events, and achieved impressive personal bests in both.

‘It was a very successful championships for all the swimmers after a turbulent year,’ said Ritchie, and it is a testament to the high calibre swimmers that the club is producing.  Ritchie went on to say, ‘it also gives our younger swimmers a goal to aspire to, which is all-important in a competitive swim club.’
